Unworthy

Your pseudo-bohemian appearance
vaguely sets your doctrine of beliefs
and you know nothing of art or music
that you did not read in some trendy
underground magazine,
being the prototypical
non-conformist that you are.
You adhere to a set of standards
determined by an invisible panel
of hipster judges who only exists
inside your head.

You spend your time
sitting in circles
with your über cool friends,
patronizing each other
but at the same time forever competing
for that one moment
of aggrandizing glory
where in you hog the proverbial spotlight
as you go dishing the dirt
on some poor hapless victim
so you can gain dominion
over the entire
SHALLOW, POINTLESS conversation.

And you chuckle to yourself
as you walk past a group
of quote-unquote NORMAL people,
patting yourself on the back
for having a PERSONALITY.
And you scoff at them and call them sell-outs
with the same superiority complex
shared by the high-school jocks
and primadonna princesses
that you so vehemently despise,
making you a SLAVE
to the same CAPITALIST dogma
that you spend every waking moment
of your life BITCHING about.

And you go with you druggie friends,
get high and get wasted on beer
as you rock out to some underground band
no one’s supposedly ever heard of
or go gaga over some indie film
that for all we know, you can barely understand.
And then you try to one-up each other
on who’s more complicated
or who’s got the more angst
when the truth is
you are not even really sure
what you’re REALLY angry about.

And you have the gall to say
you’re unique, a non-conformist
dismissing everything you label as MAINSTREAM
when you don’t even fully comprehend what that means.
In the end, you are nothing but a FAKE, a FRAUD,
and the sad thing is, you KNOW it.
You’re just a person conforming NOT to conform,
who is so afraid to be found out
that you trip all over yourself
to prove to everyone else that you’re for real
so you can convince yourself that you are.
Well, aren’t you just the coolest?
Oh, we are so NOT worthy.
